But first, requisite MIATA!

Kinja'd!!!

It was a hot climb even though I started before 0900 but the views at the top of Buzzards Roost were spectacular. Ocean views for miles and a nice sea breeze on that side of the hill. I continued on down the other side to another view point overlooking Point Dume. I then made the choice to follow a trail I saw on the map that looked like a decent loop. Well it was “I need a machete” dense with plant growth so it was slow moving, but the views there made it worth it too!

Excellent day of adventure. The original out and back trail that I was following was supposed to be a relatively easy 6 miler with the only hard part being the drop and reclimb for that overlook. But with the even further drop and extra climbs and distance of my roundabout way, it ended up being 11 miles with 3100 feet of elevation gain in total. I depleted my 3L sack of water thanks to the warm day and difficult going on this hike. At times I thought I was lost and would have to turn around, but it was just that overgrown and I indeed was still on the trail. This was probably a new record for how far I went on such a disused trail.

Malibu is PACKED with people now so I think I am in for the rest of the day. Maybe pop down to the beach after some of the people head home. Sat in some gnarly traffic headed home and PCH was closed at County line due to an accident. Saw a bright orange mclaren on a tow truck in front of neptunes net and a million flashing lights, so it couldnt have been good!

I applaud this anti-social mid-pandemic form of self betterment.

What sort of boots do you use on these local hikes?

I’ve got a set of timberlands that work great for any hikes up to this length. I really need to find a better set for the longer hikes since my feet are always feeling it if I go further, especially on rocky terrain.

The funny part is that I always searched for hikes that were off the grid/not that popular but still very rewarding. Now during the pandemic though, it’s just a hell of a lot more normal. My coworkers all think I'm nuts to go by myself but I ain't got time for people's schedules and wearing a mask while hiking sucks ass. Sure I put on a mask when passing others but the more "out there" my hike is, the less I need to do that!

Honestly you want a slightly upscale new pair of what you already have for reasonably cheap. Mostly ignore the something better option, but don’t completely go blind to it.  Made in China should sound the death knell of any potential purchase.

This is my second pair of the same boot so I must like them to some degree for sure! They are a good compromise at offering enough support but also being so light that I dont notice a disadvantage to wearing them all day versus running shoes. Theyve got a couple hundred miles on them by now and the insoles made a huge difference once I added those. I havent researched it much since these do such a good job.

The moral here was I suspect your boots fall into the very wide category of products designed by someone who really knows their stuff only to be made of inferior materials in China.

Not trying to convince you of need to buy something better.  When that day comes you should look for that better boot though.

Come up here to Malibu and make a day out of it. I’ll show you some epic spots! I’m doing a post  sunset hike tonight up to the tallest peak in the area with hopes of seeing the comet. So nice living 10-15 minutes from some of these and sub 30 from every other good hike around here.
